The American Beverage Association has suspended payments to dietitians who express opposition to soda taxes through social media, the Associated Press recently reported.
ABA has been fighting soda tax proposals throughout the country, most recently in Philadelphia. The city recently imposed a 1.5-cent-per-tax on soda and other sweetened beverages and was promptly sued by ABA, which hopes to overturn the tax.
ABA maintains it pays dietitians for their expertise and not to broadcast their opinions. However, Coca-Cola recently announced the company was suspending payments to dietitians after coming under criticism for the practice. Coca-Cola is ABA's largest member and has asked the association to review its own procedures, AP reported.
The suspension will not apply to ABA's other efforts to fight soda taxes. http://detne.ws/2dUD8Rr
